Did you know that learning to read can be made simple? What you have to learn: 26 letters of the alphabet, that alone or in combination make 45 sounds, that are spelled 70 different ways. Throw in a few spelling rules and you have a spelling program, too! Looking at it this way makes the English language knowable and doable for kids who struggle. No more learning hundreds of sight words or seeing more exceptions than rules.
This 6-module course walks you through how to teach your child to read and spell using the Visual Phonogram™ cards and an Orton-Gillingham-based/Spalding method. The Visual Phonograms™ Remedial Reading and Spelling Course is a phonics-based program. The student learns to spell words as he learns to read them. The course includes specifics on how to teach using phonics and turns an auditory task into a visual one by adding visual elements to each phonogram using the Visual Phonograms™ cards.
Stephanie taught a class of eight middle schoolers remedial spelling for one semester using the Visual Phonograms™. Not every child improved but most did. In the class, six students improved spelling by two grade levels, one student improved one grade level and one student had no change. For a child who has a hard time spelling, using a visual method of teaching can make a big difference.
If you believe your child cannot learn to read and spell simultaneously, you can work on just reading or just spelling. Tips and other supports are offered during the course.
PLEASE NOTE: This is an online course that requires the Visual Phonograms™ flashcard deck, sold separately. If you have not already purchased a set, please do so before the course begins.
Course will be offered live beginning February 19, 2024.
